Geology
Walloon Coal Measures of Middle Jurassic age with a gentle regional
dip southwards, though the direction can vary due to differential
compaction of the sediments. The deposit is the largest of the Acland
Deposits which also cover the Manningvale deposits & the Sabine
deposit. The coal measures consist of 20m to 30m of banded coal &
stone with approximately half being coal. Several seam intervals
have been recognised, these being (in descending order) Upper &
Lower Acland; Upper, Middle & Lower Sabine; & Balgowan seam
intervals. At Glen Roslyn the Upper Acland seam interval contains
the thickest coal plies but also has high raw coal ash due to
intercalated carbonaceous shales & mudstone partings.
Mining Method Open-cut bench mining using hydraulic shovels, front-end loaders
andd rear-dump trucks.
Walloon
Transport
Coal is railed from Jondaryan, which is 221km from the Port of
Brisbane.
Preparation plant Jig, classifying cyclones, dense medium cyclones and spirals.
Product Coals High volatile thermal coal; the coals are washed and blended to
produce a range of products under the Tivoli brand name suitable for
export and for domestic power generation. Processed coal exhibits
very low pollutant levels, typical Walloon coals.
Comments
Coal mining operations commenced at the New Acland mine in August 2002. The first product coal was railed from the load-out
facility near Jondaryan to the coal export terminal at the Port of Brisbane in October 2002. Production from New Acland is forecast
to rise to approximately 4Mtpa by about 2006. Approximately 60% of production is earmarked for export, with the remainder for the
domestic market.
