The heavy mineral content is generally <3% with a high ilmenite, low rutile content. The chrome content of the ilmenite fraction is |
relatively low with a significant proportion present in sphene and chromite grains. |
The sand masses vary from low areas with ridge and swale structures to large areas of high (<200m) wind blown dunes.
The Qld Government announced in 1997 that it intended to extend the Byfield National Park to encompass the whole Byfield sand mass |
and not approve the mining of mineral sands in the Byfield area. Successive Labor governments have supported this policy. |
