Geology

German Creek Formation of Late Permian age, dipping east at

approximately 5 degrees. Dykes and sills intrude all six seams that

are present and impact on mine planning for the five lower seams

which are currently worked: Pleiades - 1.2m; Aquila - 1.6m; Tieri -

2.9m; Corvus1 - 1.0m; Corvus2 - 0.6m; and German Creek - 2.5m.

Mining Method The German Creek operations comprise two underground mines

(Central and Southern) and a third (Grasstree) under development.

The Central and Southern collieries are single longwall operations

using continuous miners with either shuttle cars or battery haulers for

development work.

Preparation plant Dense medium cyclones, spirals and froth flotation.

Product Coals Low to medium volatile hard coking coal. The coal brands produced

are a blend of coals from the two underground mines and the

German Creek East open-cut mine, and are produced from the one

coal preparation plant.

Comments

Construction is progressing on the Grasstree underground mine, down-dip from Southern Colliery. The first longwall coal production

is expected during 2006, to progressively replace production from the Southern and Central collieries. When fully operational,

production from the Grasstree mine is expected to range from 3 to 5Mtpa of saleable coal.

Location

13km south southwest of Middlemount; the mine is located about 5-

10km east of the German Creek underground operations and

operations have extended southwards to include the Oak Park area.

Rangal Coal Measures of Late Permian age, dipping east at less

than 10 degrees.Three coal seams are present of which only the

upper two are mined. The seams are: Middlemount 1 seam - 4.5m;

Middlemount 2 seam - 0.7m; & Tralee seam - not worked.

Mining Method Open-cut using a dragline for overburden removal.

ROM coal is trucked to the German Creek mine for beneficiation.

Preparation plant Uses the preparation plant at the German Creek Mine.

Product Coals Low volatile coking coal.

Comments

The open-cut mine is operated in conjunction with the Capricorn Coal Development JV underground mines at German Creek.

Potential for future development is being investigated to the south-east at the Oak Park deposit, and also at the Lake Lindsay

(formerly Girrah) deposit, acquired by the Capricorn Coal Development JV from Wesfarmers in January 2003.

Geology

The Southern colliery is divided in two by a major olivine-dolerite

dyke. The area is bounded to the north and east by major en-echelon

fault structure. The Aquila seam is intruded in the north by the Aquila

sill, artifically inflating seam thickness for the area.

Mining Method Underground using longwall extraction using continuous miners and

shuttle cars. Southern also uses a flexible conveyor train linked to a

sump shearer.
