Geology
Moranbah Coal Measures of Late Permian age dipping east at 3 to 5
degrees. Three coal seams are present, but only the lower two are
currently mined. The seams are: Goonyella Upper - 3.9m (not
mined); Goonyella Middle - 7.5m; Goonyella Lower - 8.5m. Seam
splitting occurs in the mine area.
Mining Method Open-cut using draglines and shovel/truck fleets for overburden
removal. The Broadmeadow underground mine is under construction.

Mining operations at Goonyella are integrated with the adjacent Riverside open-cut mine, owned by the BHP Mitsui Coal (BMC) joint
venture. The combined workforce is administered under one management structure although coal from each mine is marketed
separately. In July 2003, BMA announced plans to develop a new underground longwall coal mine, the Broadmeadow mine, located
within BMA's Goonyella mine lease. The operation, which is planned to produce up to 3.6Mt of high quality coking coal a year, will
feature BMA's first application of punch longwall mining, utilising the existing opencut pit for longwall panel access. Commencement
of longwall operations is planned for the second half of 2005.
